'Borat' fans busted for wearing mankinis in Kazakhstan

'Borat' fans busted for wearing mankinis in Kazakhstan”

A group of Czech tourists have been arrested in Kazakhstan for donning Borat-style mankinis in the middle of the capital city.

Local police spokeswoman Sofya Kylyshbekova confirmed that the six were arrested for appearing "obscene in a public place" and given a very nice fine of 22,500 KZT (£51/$67).

The six ran into trouble after posing by a sign saying "I Love Astana" in their thong swimwear, and curly wigs, despite the freezing temperatures now gripping Kazakhstan.

Parts of the movie, such as Borat explaining local wine is made from horse urine and saying gay men have to wear blue hats, were not received well.

"I think they would not have reacted in any way".

"This is teasing, they should have been jailed", an Instagram user commented, while another poster wrote, "They should have had a criminal charge for insulting the honour of the nation". "It's mad amusing. If you're offended you're a fool", Georg Vassilenko wrote on Facebook.

Six Czech tourists were arrested Friday in Kazakhstan for wearing mankinis, similar to those worn by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen in the 2006 film "Borat", Kazakhstan news website informburo.kz reported Monday. In Kazakhstan law, hooliganism is any act that is "a particularly audacious violation of public order", including "committing indecent acts".

The maximum penalty is up to a year in prison or in a "corrective labour" camp, though that is usually reserved for violent offences. Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, which followed the title character to the U.S., has been banned.

It was banned on its release in Kazakhstan, where authorities complained about its depiction of the country as backwards, racist and sexist. The country has slowly come to terms with the film, however.

Officials later lightened up on Borat - in 2012 the Kazakh foreign minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov publicly thanked the film for attracting more tourism to the country.
