D-backs skipper Torey Lovullo wins NL Manager of the Year award”

In the National League debate, the victor was ultimately Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, the first-year skipper who turned the D-backs from a 93-loss team cellar dweller to a 93-win postseason team. Lovullo became the fourth straight N.L. Manager of the Year to win the award in his first season with the team.

Lovullo won the honor in voting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The prize was announced Tuesday on MLB Network.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo won the award for the first time, receiving 18 first place votes.

He followed John Farrell from Toronto to Boston in 2013, and in '15, he managed 48 games while Farrell was on medical leave.

Powered by Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and midseason acquisition J.D. Martinez, and led by pitchers Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray, the Diamondbacks made the playoffs this year. They beat Colorado in the NL wild-card game before getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Division Series. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts finished second in the balloting while Rockies manager Bud Black finished third.

He began his managerial career in 2002 with Class A Columbus, and he paid his dues by spending nine years in the Minors before joining the Blue Jays' big league coaching staff in 2011.
