Enbridge Reports New "Bare Spots" On Line Five

Even our typically pro-business Gov. Rick Snyder is starting to get anxious about Line 5. The report says there are more spots that have been laid bare to the metal because its safety coating has worn off.

Michigan's US senators want federal regulators to determine whether Enbridge's twin oil pipelines in the Great Lakes waterway Straits of Mackinac violated safety requirements, The Associated Press reported.

MI has requested inspections of all 128 anchor locations after the initial reports about gaps in the protective coating. The news comes after Enbridge had previously defended the pipeline, saying in March that the coating gaps were merely "limited".

The company is being called before the Michigan Pipeline Safety Commission next month to give a status report on Line Five. He says there's no imminent threat to the Great Lakes, but he says there are "significant concerns" for the long term. For well over a year now I have been calling for full transparency from Enbridge on the safety of this pipeline, and it is very disturbing to learn they have known about the damage to the protective coating since 2014. In response, state officials have demanded that Enbridge provide "full accounting" on the condition of the pipeline's safety at the state's Pipeline Safety Advisory Board meeting on December 11 in Lansing.
