Saskatchewan Party Melfort MLA Kevin Phillips passes away

Saskatchewan Party Melfort MLA Kevin Phillips passes away”

Kevin Phillips, the MLA for the riding of Melfort, has passed away. The death of Phillips was "completely without warning", Premier Brad Wall said in a statement.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said everyone is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Phillips on Monday.

Phillips, who was 63, was married with four children and five grandchildren.

Phillips was first elected to the Saskatchewan legislature in the 2011 provincial election and was re-elected in 2016. It was the first new shelter of its kind opened in the province since 1989.

A memorial book for Phillips has been set up at Melfort City Hall, if people wish to leave a message or tribute for his family.

He worked in business and advertising, including as a partner with the Melfort Journal for more than 25 years.

Wall said it is a hard day and several other MLA's on both sides of the legislature paid condolences on the passing of Phillips.

Phillips also had served as the mayor of Melfort, the president of the Kinsmen Club and a chairman of the Melfort school division.
