Seven brands of hoverboards recalled due to fire, explosion hazards

Almost 14,000 scooter/hoverboards are being recalled, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The agency points toward the LayZ Board brand, saying that there's evidence that it was involved a fire in Pennsylvania that demolished a townhouse and damaged another four of them.

More than 500,000 hoverboards have been recalled since past year. CPSC first put out an alert in May, after another LayZ Board hoverboard started a fire that killed two young girls.

The recalls announced Tuesday includes 8,700 iLive-brand self-balancing scooters sold at Ace Hardware, hh gregg stores, and Heartland America catalogs from April 2016 through March 2017 for between $170 and $200.

This is not the first time hoverboard warnings and recalls have been issued by the CPSC.

According to CPSC, the products were manufactured in Shenzhen, China and more than 3,000 units were imported to the United States. The big cause of concern is the lithium-ion battery contained within it and the possibly faulty construction that allows that battery to overheat and catch on fire. All of these recalls are due to a risk of the products smoking, catching fire, and/or exploding.

The recall also includes Sonic Smart Wheels scooters sold only in Louisiana, Drone Nerds hoverboards sold only in Florida.
