Tesla is a 'hotbed for racist behavior,' class-action lawsuit claims”

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

Compounding matters for Tesla, a New Yorker piece on Monday featured a former female employee who said she didn't receive a promotion due to gender discrimination.

Other recent lawsuits filed against Tesla include claims that the company failed to give proper notice when laying off hundreds of workers, claims concerning anti-LGTBQ harassment, a complaint from a woman engineer alleging harassment, and a complaint from the National Labour Relations Board defending employee claims that Tesla attempted to suppress a unionization effort. Vaughn alleged that employees and supervisors regularly used the "N word" around him and other black colleagues. He started working at Tesla in April and has filed written complaints to the human resources team, none of which were investigated.

Vaughn is seeking unspecified damages under California anti-discrimination law.

"Although Tesla stands out as a groundbreaking company at the forefront of the electric auto revolution, its standard operating procedure at the Tesla factory is pre-Civil Rights era race discrimination", Vaughn's complaint to the court reads.

Last month, three African-American contract workers sued Tesla alleging that it permitted racial harassment and discrimination, according to the Los Angeles Times. Those men also said they routinely heard people on the factory floor using racial epithets. An October lawsuit by ex-Tesla employee Owen Diaz said the coworkers called him the "N word" and shared derogatory cartoons.

In March, another Black employee alleging he was sexually harassed, racially harassed and racially discriminated against at the Fremont facility.

When they complained to management about the alleged abuse, nothing was done, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit is the latest in a growing number of lawsuits accusing Tesla of discrimination.

'But in this instance, from what we know so far, this does not seem to be such a case'.

CEO Elon Musk sent a staff-wide email earlier this year advising black employees not to overreact when someone treats you inappropriately in the workplace, according to the lawsuit.

On top of lawsuits, Tesla is facing criticism over its failure to meet production targets for its entry-level sedan, the Model 3. A crucial detail is that workers at the Fremont plant have not unionized, though Bloomberg says the United Auto Workers have an ongoing campaign to make that happen.

The company denied the claims and said the decision was based on employee performance reviews.
