Trump Will Not Greet Nobel Prize Recipients

President Donald Trump will not have a personal meeting with American Nobel Prize laureates before they get their prizes in December, according to Stat News.

Not all the honorees are disappointed.

Joachim Frank, a biophysicist at Columbia University and a Nobel Prize victor in chemistry, said he wouldn't have attended the White House event even if he had been invited and said he was "very relieved" when he realized there would be no meeting with the president. Joachim Frank, PhD, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics and of biological sciences at New York City-based Columbia University, was one of the three recipients of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Former president George W. Bush attended the event every year except 2006, when Vice President Dick Cheney greeted the prize recipients instead.

Former President Barack Obama met with laureates every year except in 2009, his first year in office, when he himself was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Mr Frank, who said he was "relieved" at not having to turn down an invitation, noted that he does not speak for all the U.S. winners, but said: "I strongly believe that as thinking intelligent people they will have a similar attitude as I". Mr Trump is set to return on Tuesday from a 12-day Asia tour. Winners have historically met with the US president before leaving for Sweden to receive their honors. France Cordova, the director of the National Science Foundation and an annual presence at the embassy's event, will attend as well.

An official from the Obama administration who worked to coordinate the annual Nobel events said that past year the embassy postponed the reception to December after Obama scheduled a pre-Thanksgiving trip to Europe and South America.

Laureates have in the past used their access to the president as a political platform.

Scientists orchestrated a 'March for Science' to protest Trump in the Spring.
