Twitter launches premium API effort starting with historical Tweet search”

Twitter Inc.is doubling down on its data business with a new service that gives software developers more access to the social media company's wealth of information.

These premium APIs will serve as a bridge between Twitter's free APIs and enterprise versions.

"The new premium APIs bring the reliability and stability of our enterprise APIs to our broader developer ecosystem for the first time", Tornes wrote. This is a marked difference from the company's Gnip offering, as it lets developers pay monthly instead of annually. Developers seeking access to the new service will need to provide more information about themselves and how they plan to use the data, which wasn't necessary to access the free version.

The Search Tweets API is the first of several premium APIs to launch, with others rolling out over the weeks and months ahead.

The Search Tweets API, through which developers can query the past 30 days of Twitter data, debuted on Tuesday in beta form, alongside a revised developer dashboard.

"There's a huge gap, where if you're a developer building something with Twitter's free API, you'll start to reach the rate limit and restrictions and can only go so far".

The new products are called Twitter Premium APIs, and they're created to offer expanded access to Twitter data beyond what's now available in the free APIs.

In his apology at the company's second Twitter Flight developer conference that year, CEO Jack Dorsey acknowledged that Twitter's developer policies had been unpredictable and asked for another chance.

Developers will get a self-serve portal to monitor data usage, manage subscriptions and payments.

Developers will likely welcome this solution, though many will also say it's long overdue.

Twitter tried to mend its relationship with developers earlier this year with the launch of a new API platform which focused on streamlining APIs and the promise of additional tiers of access. Now, Twitter is trying to come up with ways to sell more data to offset the fact that its advertising business is shrinking.

Twitter is asking parties interested in the new developer tools to fill out an application. This can include a searchable archive of tweets, which might help a brand or advertiser do everything from understand how people perceive their brand online, to know more about when and where their customers usually post.

Developers may be able to replicate some of these functions by processing fetched data, but Twitter's fee in part covers the convenience of not having to craft that code.
