Two Cats make Wooden Award watch list

Kentucky freshman guard Kevin Knox shoots a 3-pointer during the game against Utah Valley on Friday, November 10, 2017 in Lexington, Ky.

Five players on the UConn women's basketball team are among the 30 preseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award.

Duke, Louisville, Mississippi State, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas each have two players on the list. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for one of college basketball's most prestigious individual honors. The Big 12 has won the award the previous two seasons, with OU senior guard Buddy Hield taking it home in 2016 and Frank Mason winning it last season.

Nineteen players on the list are seniors, headlined by A'ja Wilson, last season's most outstanding player at the Final Four who led SC to the 2017 NCAA title. Arizona and Duke are tied with the most players on the watch list with three.

Young was named the Big 12 Player of the Week Monday, the second freshman in conference history to receive the award on week one.

Already this year, the Milwaukee native has been named a Preseason All-ACC selection, espnW's 15 best player in the country and an Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Top-20 Watch List candidate.
