NASA launches advanced satellite to improve weather forecast”

The satellite is created to provide observations for the country's various projects and services such as weather forecasting and environmental hazard assessment missions.

They just launched JPSS-1 (Joint Polar Satellite System-1), the first of a series of NOAA satellites that should improve the accuracy of weather forecasts extending as long as a whole week.

The satellite will have to go through 3 months of tests before it's operational.

The satellite, now known as Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1), launched into orbit on November 18 on a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from the Vanderberg Air Force Base in California.

Circling the Earth from pole to pole 14 times a day, JPSS-1 carries a suite of five instruments meant to make global observations that will improve forecasts of severe weather events three to seven days beforehand.

JPSS-1 "carries a suite of advanced instruments created to take global measurements of atmospheric, land and sea conditions, from sea surface temperatures, volcanic ash, hurricane intensity and many more".

NASA on Saturday launched a next-generation satellite into space created to monitor weather around the world and help improve forecasts.

NASA said Saturday JPSS-1 began to operate on its own power approximately an hour after it launched from Space Launch Complex-2 and will be rebranded as NOAA-20 upon arrival on its final orbit. It should also bolster monitoring for long-term climate patterns like El Niño.
