Chuck Schumer Takes Aim At 23andMe And Other Home DNA Testing Services

"When it comes to protecting consumers from at-home DNA test kit service, the federal government is behind; putting your most personal genetic information in the hands of third parties for their exclusive use raises a lot of concerns, from the potential for discrimination by employers all the way to health insurance", said Schumer.

Schumer said the DNA testing industry, which generated $70 million in 2015 and is expected to increase to $340 million in five years, doesn't have a standard policy for how they use and distribute customers' information.

Schumer singled out AncestryDNA's fine print, which says it has the right to "communicate your genetic information for the purposes of providing products and services".

Many say they have strict rules about sharing any personal information and don't provide genetic data without scrubbing identities, getting users' consent or receiving a court order.

He called the language troubling because it suggests that some firms might want to monetize the DNA data they receive.

Kate Black, 23andMe's privacy officer and corporate counsel, told NBC News on Sunday night: "We do not sell individual customer information, nor do we include any customer data in our research program without an individual's voluntary and informed consent. Schumer's concern for customer privacy and believe any regulation should match the commitments we make to our customers", the company said.

The FTC and did not immediately return messages for comment.

The statement added, "We do not sell your data to third parties or share it with researchers without your consent" and "you may request that we delete your data or account at any time".
