Walmart takes down T-shirt about killing journalists

Walmart takes down T-shirt about killing journalists”

A supposedly humorous T-shirt that suggested reporters should be lynched was on sale at until an objection caused the retailer to take it down.

Walmart removed a controversial T-shirt urging violence against journalists from its website after a news association asked for it to be pulled amid "today's vitriolic political and ideological environment", according to a report.

"Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required", the back of the shirt available on their website read, a reference to hanging journalists.

The offering, which was sold on by third-party seller, could have also been purchased along with a coffee mug with the same "slogan".

The company was quick to respond to the group's concerns, RTDNA pointed out, responding only hours later and pulling it from the site.

Shelley had e-mailed Walmart Wednesday (Nov. 29) asking that the shirt be removed.

"It is our belief that at the least, T-shirts or any other items bearing such words simply inflame the passions of those who either don't like, or don't understand, the news media. At worst, they openly encourage violence targeting journalists".

Mr Shelley said: "We are grateful for Walmart's swift action, but dismayed that it, and anyone else selling the shirt, would offer such an offensive and inflammatory product".

The 'Rope. Tree. Journalist.' slogan has been in existence for several years. "Some assembly required." shirt made news at a rally for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in November of past year.

"This item was sold by a third-party seller on our marketplace and clearly violates our policy", Walmart said. A Reuters journalist tweeted a photo of a man wearing the shirt just prior to the 2016 election.

The RTDNA's letter to Walmart noted that nearly three dozen journalists in the US have been physically assaulted in 2017, and that another 48 have been killed worldwide.

Shelley also said that while RTNDA is "a fierce proponent of the First Amendment that is politically nonpartisan" and that Walmart is within its legal rights to sell the T-shirt, "that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do".
