FBI makes arrest in Wake Robin ricin investigation”

Miller was charged with knowing possession of an unregistered select agent.

Betty Miller was charged on Thursday with violating USA laws that prohibit possessing biological weapons after tests revealed that she had manufactured ricin powder at the Wake Robin retirement home in Shelburne, Vermont.

Miller, who is scheduled to make an initial appearance at federal court in Burlington Friday, is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. She made a total of 2-3 tablespoons of the highly toxic powder and then placed it in multiple servings of other residents' food and beverages over a period of weeks.

Miller drove herself to UVM Medical Center Monday to be evaluated.

Officials say no other residents reported symptoms consistent with ricin poisoning at the time.

The ricin was allegedly found in a wicker basket holding pill bottles inside a kitchen cupboard in Miller's Wake Robin apartment Tuesday afternoon. Vermont State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation said they were investigating the source of the deadly toxin ricin that was found at the retirement community.

"Entry teams also observed a sheet of instructions for making Ricin that appeared to have been printed from the internet, and a laptop computer in the resident", Emmons wrote in the affidavit.

Court documents show she told investigators she had become interested in plant based poisons during the past summer.

Betty Miller told an FBI agent that she wanted to "injure herself" and was testing the poison's effectiveness on other residents at the Wake Robin senior living facility, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court on Thursday.

The FBI said Miller was not registered with the government to possess ricin.

Investigators have not said if additional charges would be filed. She's due to be arraigned on Friday afternoon. MyNBC5.com will update this story as soon as more information is available.
