Kroger recalls bottled water for babies after mold found

Kroger recalls bottled water for babies after mold found”

The Kroger Co.is recalling nearly six months worth of its Comforts For Baby brand purified water with fluoride because samples have tested positive for mold contamination.

Kroger, the largest grocery store chain in the country, tested the water after receiving customer complaints and found contamination by a species of mold called Talaromyces penicillium.

According to a news release on the Food and Drug Administration website, the recall is for 1-gallon bottles of Comforts FOR BABY Purified Water With Fluoride Added with sell-by dates from April 26, 2018, to October 10, 2018.

"The water is sold in clear containers, but the mold may not be visible to the naked eye", the FDA stated on their recall page.

The water is generally used for mixing with juices and cereals.

Exposure could lead to allergic reactions, asthma attacks or irritation. The company has told stores to remove the recalled bottles from their shelves.

The recalled products have a UPC of 0 41260 37597 2 and sell-by dates from 4/26/2018 - 10/10/2018.

The product was distributed to Kroger stores in Alabama and Tennessee along with 12 other states.

A recall of the water was first announced in July, but it was not immediately known if the new recall is connected to the former one.

The FDA issued a consumer alert Monday to reach parents and caregivers who may have bought "Comforts FOR BABY Purified Water with Fluoride Added 1 GAL (3.78 L)", which is intended for infants.

Consumers should consult a health care professional if they believe their infant has consumed any of the recalled water.
