Man planned mass shooting at Islamic center in Florida, police say”

Bernandino Bolatete from Jacksonville, Florida, is facing a federal gun charge after law enforcement officials uncovered his alleged plan to commit mass murder at a mosque by climbing up its tower and opening fire on the congregants.

A man with anti-Islamic sentiments was arrested after he planned to carry out a mass shooting at an Islamic center in Florida, authorities said Monday.

An undercover officer then communicated with and recorded Bolatete, confirming his plans to carry out an attack with a firearm, Sheriff Mike Williams said at a press conference.

According to court records, the detective became friendly with Bolatete, a Philippine national who has a green card, at a local shooting range.

The department's SWAT team arrested him on December 1 after he expressed interest in a prohibited possession of an accessory to one of his firearms.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation of Jacksonville, started investigating in October Bernandino Gawala Bolatete after a source tipped JSO.

"Keep shooting those Muslims, you know, on Friday", the suspect allegedly said with a laugh.

Bolatete's investigation is ongoing and he could face additional charges.

The suspect alluded to possibly shooting people at the Islamic Center on a Friday, which is the day of the week when Muslims congregate at mosques for prayer.

During one meeting, Bolatete told the officer that he used to be a "range master" at a shooting range in the Philippines, according to the criminal complaint.

The officers raided Bolatete's home just as he received the new suppressor and found five rifles including one AR-15. Bolatete said he didn't want any paperwork associated with the silencer sale, WJAX reports.

The undercover officer met with the suspect on November 27 at Bolatete's workplace, Wacko's Liquor Depot.

During the investigation, the FBI also learned that Bolatete meant to have an unregistered silencer delivered to his home Friday.

Days later, the undercover officer and Bolatete met with the agreement that Bolatete would purchase another silencer for $100.

Bolatete was charged with the illegal possession of a firearm silencer, while other charges are now pending. The two made the transaction at an Acaedmy Sports on Atlantic Boulevard.
