Trouble mounts for Sanofi dengue vaccine over safety concerns

Trouble mounts for Sanofi dengue vaccine over safety concerns”

The agency has already directed Sanofi to suspend the sale and distribution of the dengue vaccine after the latter admitted that it has potential health risks to patients who have not had the disease prior to immunization.

The World Health Organization supported a decision by the Philippines Department of Health on Tuesday to suspend vaccinations with Sanofi's dengue drug Dengvaxia, the WHO said in a statement.

With the vaccine now widely available, the Philippines health authority rushed to vaccinate almost 734,000 children, as part of a program that cost the government 3.5 billion pesos. (WHO will now review Sanofi's safety data in more detail.) This followed an earlier warning that the vaccine should only be administered in countries where dengue is more than 50% prevalent.

Sanofi said the risk of severe dengue occurring in previously uninfected people who were inoculated with Dengvaxia was about two in 1,000 and these individuals recovered with treatment.

The spokesperson, however, said the results confirmed beneficial value of the vaccine in people with a prior history of dengue infection before vaccination.

However, the manufacturer of the vaccine, French drug company Sanofi Pasteur, announced recently the vaccine must be strictly limited due to evidence it can worsen dengue in people not previously exposed to the infection.

They have received at least one dose of the vaccine as part of a government program that cost 3.5 billion pesos ($69 million).

The Department of Health has recommended that she be moved to a Manila hospital for closer monitoring, but Bayugo said she had shown signs of improvement with her platelet count recovering. The scare surrounding the disease, which upon infection can progress to progress to the deadly dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, has led scientists to develop the world's first ever dengue fever vaccine called the Dengvaxia vaccine.

The recent findings outline that sales forecasts may not be reached over the safety issues and clinical proofs that show unequal protection against various strains of dengue. However, under moderate transmission, hospitalizations of vaccinated children increased three years after vaccination, compared to unvaccinated children.
