Spain makes one of 'Europe's biggest' cocaine busts

Spain makes one of 'Europe's biggest' cocaine busts”

Authorities from Spain said Monday that they had seized a shipment of bananas from Colombia in which drug traffickers had put six metric tons of cocaine.

The port of the Bay of Algeciras, one of the largest in Spain, annually moves nearly five million containers, making the work of analysis and control very hard.

A 5 tonne drug was found in a cargo ship from Medellin, Colombia.

Cocaine, which was discovered on November 28th, had market value of about 210 million euros.

Three people had been arrested in relation to the haul, including the Spanish head of the import company using the container, and more arrests have not been ruled out with at least two more under investigation, it said.

The cocaine had been divided into 5,299 blocks, each weighing around a kilogram, which is usually a sign that it is to be distributed to "different destinations and organizations".

The seizure is "one of Europe's biggest" and the second largest of cocaine ever carried out by Spanish authorities, the statement said.

The container was due to be shipped to El Prat de Llobregat, just outside of Barcelona. The biggest seizure of around 7,600 kg of the drug was confiscated at sea.
