Spanking kids can make them violent, study says

Spanking kids can make them violent, study says”

Temple, along with a team of researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, has been checking in with a group of almost 800 people every year.

"We found that experiencing corporal punishment as a child was related to later perpetration of dating violence against an intimate partner", said Dr. Jeff Temple. Nearly two-thirds said they were spanked as kids, and 19 percent of them admitted to dating violence. "While parents may think this form of physical punishment is a good lesson, substantial research indicates that it does way more harm than good". The researchers say that time-outs or rewarding positive behavior are both more effective at teaching kids right from wrong.

Temple said while it's not a cause, "it follows that if a kid learns that physical punishment is a way to solve a conflict" and may be more likely to use violence to solve conflicts with the people they date in the future. They asked them about their childhood experiences, physical abuse and their current experiences with dating violence. Nineteen percent of study participants reported having acted violently in a dating situation (and that's just the reported stats).

"There's a tendency for adults who have been spanked to say 'I turned out just fine, '" Temple said, and noted that those adults continue the cycle of physical discipline in their own children.

According to the research, about 80% of children cross-culturally and worldwide are physically punished.

The investigation found that youthful grown-ups who had been physically rebuffed were 29 percent more prone to confer "dating violence", in spite of the fact that Temple's meaning of the term is vague. "We want to be healthier and happier", explained Temple. Oklahoma State University Professor Robert Larzelere has found that it's good to spank children so long as parents make it clear that the punishment is "motivated by love and concern for their well-being".
