Court rules to keep pro-Kurdish opposition leader Selahattin Demirtaş behind bars

The trial on terrorism charges of Selahattin Demirtas, the leader of Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party, began in Ankara on Thursday, without the defendant in the courtroom.

Demirtas, a former Turkish presidential candidate known as the "Kurdish Obama", has been in pre-trial custody for 399 days in the maximum-security Edirne prison and faces a potential sentence of 142 years. The party has previously accused the Justice Ministry of preventing any court appearances by Demirtas, who was considered one of the president's major rivals, with oratory skills matching Recep Tayyip Erdogan, AFP said.

The Kurdish leader is being tried in absentia after the court denied his right to attend, insisting he use a video link from the prison in which he is being held - an option he refused.

Demirtas was arrested previous year as the government launched a crackdown following a failed coup attempt, which critics say has been expanded to target all government opponents.

Senior researcher Emma Sinclair Webb of the US based Human Rights Watch says the case is alarming. Demirtaş rejected the ruling, underling that he wants "face-to-face" trial.

Earlier this week, a motion was filed against 19 more HDP deputies for disseminating propaganda on behalf of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
