Federal Bureau of Investigation doubles reward in Texas border patrol agent's death

In the affidavit, the FBI investigator said an informant told a Customs and Border Protection agent that two brothers who were recently smuggled into the United States spoke about assaulting the agents. "There is probable cause the subject vehicle contains trace evidence associated with the murder of a Border Patrol agent and the assault of another, alien smuggling and drug trafficking", the search warrant states. But upon questioning, both brothers denied any role in the attack on the agents, according to the affidavit. The Suspect 1's brother told agents he went to retrieve the auto the next day.

Several elected officials initially called the incident an attack.

"The FBI is aggressively addressing all leads and tips", FBI spokesperson Jeanette Harper said.

The SOI, the document states, is familiar with individuals involved in the illegal smuggling of undocumented immigrants across the U.S./Mexico border and told the Border Patrol about an alleged "coyote" who told a Customs and Border Protection agent about a group he recently smuggled into the U.S.

On Sunday, investigators found fabric with red stains and other discolored clothing after obtaining a warrant to search a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am that transported Antonio Munoz, and another brother, Daniel Munoz, on or around November 20. The woman told the Federal Bureau of Investigation she heard Suspect 1 speaking on the phone about crossing into the USA with a load of methamphetamine and heroin.

Martinez's autopsy report has not yet been completed, the El Paso County Medical Examiner's Office said Wednesday.

The warrant shows that investigators believe the people responsible for the attack would have been in close proximity to the agents and would have possibly gotten blood or other bodily fluids transferred onto their clothing or body during the assault. Court filings show he was deported in 2015.

Border Patrol Agent Stephen Garland was found injured alongside Martinez, in a culvert off Interstate 10, in Van Horn, Texas.

Munoz is being represented in his immigration case by federal public defender Kari Converse of Albuquerque. Munoz waived his rights to a preliminary hearing and a detention hearing.

On Nov. 29, Antonio Munoz made an initial appearance before a magistrate judge on charges that he made illegal re-entry into the United States. His case was moved to Yarborough's court in Albuquerque that same day, records show.

Separately, Texas is also offering a $20,000 reward for information. Robert Moore and Nick Miroff wrote this story.
