FG Identifies 2778 Nigerians In Libya Detention Camps”

Fachano added that there were challenges in extracting Nigerians from Libya which required the assistance of the government.

"They comprised of 65 adult females, 179 adult males, seven children and six infants".

He said the returnees were received by officials of NEMA, Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

He also confirmed that four of the returnees had medical cases and were promptly taken away on an ambulance for treatment.

He said, "The Federal government now in talks with officials of Nigeria's Charge D'Affairs in Libya to ascertain the number of Nigerians held up in Libya detention centers so as to expedite action in bringing them back home".

The Tuesday returnees arrived aboard a BURQA Airline Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration number, 5N-DMG from Libya.

The Charge d'Affaires of Nigeria in Libya, Illiya Fachano, told the News Agency of Nigeria "there is a camp with 5000 Nigerians and we need the diplomatic police to escort us to extract them".

After constant complaints, several sub-Saharan countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Rwanda, and Nigeria announced the progressive repatriation of their compatriots who traveled to Libya in order to cross the Mediterranean Sea and reach Europe.

"Before you can assist them, they will have to sign a consent form, after which emergency travel certificates are issued".

Beyond identification, Onyeama said most of the Nigerian victims were trapped in areas not officially recognised by the United Nations.

Young African men bound for Europe are frequently caught in trafficking networks and sold for labor in Libya, where many migrants are detained, tortured, and even killed, according to the U.N. International Organization for Migration (IOM).

He called on the United Nations to help out by sponsoring repatriation flights, provide food and health materials for the migrants.

"On the issue of Libya practising slave trade, of course, it has been in the news in the last two weeks; also, the imprisonment in various detention centres of Nigerians".

"The Embassy will continue to engage the legitimate government in Libya and other stakeholders in addressing the plight of Nigerian migrants in that country".

Foreign Affairs ministry spokesman, Tiwatope Elias-Fatiile, said that the 2778 were Nigerians identified in detention camps that embassy officials had been visiting.

Mr. Fachano said that the repatriation exercise would be a continuous exercise.

"He is in Abuja already and during the period of the consultations, arrangements have been made for him to address press conferences on the issue".
