Judge sets AT&T/Time Warner antitrust trial for March 19

Judge sets AT&T/Time Warner antitrust trial for March 19”

"I'll be honest; I'm deeply anxious about the antitrust division under President Trump". In a speech on Wednesday, she said past federal agreements to allow certain mergers had been "epic failures".

The legal fight will proceed after the Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against AT&T in an effort block its proposed $85 billion takeover of Time Warner.

She laid out her views on dealmaking in a speech on Wednesday.

A federal judge has set a March 19 trial date for the US government's case challenging AT&T's proposed merger with Time Warner.

But the Justice Department's lawsuit against AT&T suggests media mergers might undergo more scrutiny in the future, or would at least have to wait until AT&T's case has wrapped.

"Getting an opinion on April 22 is not going to happen", he said. That nearly feels like a hat tip to Delrahim, who in a speech last month said past behavioral remedies to address antitrust concerns have not worked out as planned and have been hard to enforce.

AT&T will have to pay Time Warner $500 million if the merger is not consummated by April 22. She added that the $77 billion sale of Aetna to CVS will also test antitrust enforcers.

Ms. Warren did admit she was anxious about whether the Justice Department's AT&T lawsuit was politically motivated given Mr. Trump's attacks on CNN, which Time Warner owns. Such an alliance of convenience puts more pressure on big M&A.
