NFL Reportedly Considering Changing Targeting Rule To Mimic College Football

NFL Reportedly Considering Changing Targeting Rule To Mimic College Football”

In responding to questions about helmet-to-helmet hits and players launching to make tackles, Vincent says Wednesday that the National Football League has seen targeting reviews "work to a degree" in the college game.

The NCAA put in their targeting rule before this year's college football season, with the rule specifically saying that "no player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent.with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder".

The one-game suspension Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski received for his targeting of Bills corner Tre'Davious White magnified this even further.

While one player saw his suspension overturned, it has sparked a major debate on what has to be considered an arbitrary punishment process around the NFL.

In an effort to improve player safety, the league has tried to crack down on devastating hits.

As the NFL continues to search for ways to eliminate unsafe hits, one idea being discussed is adding a targeting rule that would mirror the one already used in college football.

Vincent said the enforcement of such penalties and concurrent suspensions have started to limit the number of risky hits. Intent is not taken under consideration by officials when deciding whether or not to uphold a targeting penalty.

Troy Vincent says the National Football League will consider putting in a targeting rule, similar to what college FB has. "It is on our agenda - one of our agenda items that we will discuss with eh coaches and our competition committee".
