'Open Question' Whether US Athletes Will Attend 2018 Winter Olympics

'Open Question' Whether US Athletes Will Attend 2018 Winter Olympics”

Nikki Haley hinted on Wednesday that America's Olympic athletes might not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics because of a potential volatile situation with North Korea. I have not heard anything about that.

"I think those are conversations that we're going to have to have", she added.

While the US President Donald Trump announced that a new set of sanctions would be imposed on North Korea following its latest missile test-launch, Haley urged the global community to cut off all ties with North Korea.

"But that implies that our South Korean allies aren't up to the job", he told The Telegraph.

The Games are scheduled to run February 9-25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, just 50 miles from the North Korean border. "We don't ever fear anything, we live our lives", said Haley.

The US military flew a B-1B bomber over South Korea on Wednesday as part of a massive joint aerial drill, in a move seen as a warning to the North.

Tensions have been heating up on the Korean Peninsula after a two-month lull, with North Korea launching a missile last week that experts said showed the capability of hitting much of the continental United States. "And certainly that is a ideal opportunity for all of them to go and do something they have worked so hard for".

"What we will do is make sure we are taking every precaution possible to make sure that [U.S. athletes are] safe and to know everything that's going on around them".

South Korean officials and Games organisers have also repeatedly promised that the event will be safe to attend.

"We do not wish for a war but shall not hide from it, and should the USA miscalculate our patience and light the fuse for a nuclear war, we will surely make the USA dearly pay the consequences with our mighty nuclear force which we have consistently strengthened", the spokesman said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

"We have to watch this closely, and it's changing by the day", she said.

This follows the announcement that Russian Federation is banned from next year's Winter Olympics. French athletes, however, have said they are optimistic about competing.

Early this week it was announced Russian Federation would be banned from taking part in the Olympics after "systemic manipulation" of anti-doping rules.
