Peralta board orders chancellor to halt Oakland A's stadium planning

Peralta board orders chancellor to halt Oakland A's stadium planning”

"A key component to making this project a success will be an active and meaningful engagement with A's fans as well as with the broad and incredibly diverse community of Oakland", says James Miner, AICP, Sasaki Principal, in a release.

The Peralta Community College District board of trustees decided in a closed session meeting Tuesday to direct its chancellor to halt a community engagement process with the Oakland A's on a proposed new baseball stadium near the district's offices and Laney College. "We look forward to continued partnerships that enrich the learning experience of our students and the community we have served for more than fifty years".

We are shocked by Peralta's decision to not move forward.

A's President Dave Kaval and his team had considered this the top spot and had engaged in conversations with community members, officials and business owners in the area in hopes of building a privately financed ballpark to open as soon as 2023. And while there's support in the general Oakland community for a Laney College location, administrators and students overwhelmingly voted against it. "It was never that this was a done deal and I think that I have been very clear that we had no commitment, no deal, no contract", said Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Jowel Laguerre.

The Oakland Athletics had big plans for a new ballpark, but it appears those plans have hit a roadblock. "We are disappointed that we will not have that opportunity". In a statement, Mayor Libby Schaaf also said, "Oakland remains fiercely determined to keep the A's in Oakland".

This latest setback comes less than one month after a design team of Sasaki, Snøhetta, Studio T-Square, and HOK were selected to design the new stadium.
