Ryan Reynolds Cast as Pikachu in Upcoming Live-Action Pokémon Movie”

After being both Green Lantern and Deadpool, this makes sense.

Casting has ramped up recently on Detective Pikachu, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Justice Smith signing up to play the male (human) lead.

For any other leading man, that synopsis would be a head-scratcher, but Reynolds is turning roles that wouldn't work for many of his peers into gold. There are even some weird mashups that have been floating around for years that are especially prescient.

Readers of Shacknews may have noticed that our staff has an affinity for the idea of an English-speaking Pikachu in a detective's hat who solves mysteries.

It's said that the moving will start shooting mid January and be directed by Rob Letterman who is known for his work in Goosebumps.

While not every Pikachu is a detective, the one that is Detective Pikachu is especially "good at finding things".

If you're wondering how Legendary is using Ryan Reynolds for this role, you can expect some performance capture. Smith then joins Pikachu and "a sassy journalist" (Newton) to track him down.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ryan Reynolds has been cast as Detective Pikachu himself. Legendary intends for the feature to be the first in a new series of films that explores the Pokemon franchise from a fresh perspective.

In addition, Universal Pictures is named a distributor of the film outside Japan, whereas Toho will handle distribution there.

No release date for Detective Pikachu has been announced.
