Sia Addresses Claim Fame Could Be 'Damaging' For Her Muse Maddie Ziegler

Sia Addresses Claim Fame Could Be 'Damaging' For Her Muse Maddie Ziegler”

Sia has responded to a newspaper column questioning the ethics of her collaborations with dancer Maddie Ziegler. "Not just myself but all directors, stage parents and agents [w] ith their children, clients, charges".

Ziegler acts as the face of the star, her on-stage and on-screen conduit of emotion, as Sia - who has said she does not want to be famous - prefers to cover her face with a wig when performing.

Responding to the feature, Sia said she shares the same concerns as the journalist.

The piece published in The Guardian on Wednesday was titled: 'The Sia conundrum: if fame is so damaging, why pass it on to a child?' Since beginning work with Sia, Ziegler has starred in videos for Sia's songs "Chandelier" (which has over 1.7 billion views), "Elastic Heart", "Big Girls Cry", "Cheap Thrills", "The Greatest" and more. Moreover it's good that she "feels very protective" of the dancer, but she doesn't explain how that protectiveness takes form other than checking in with Ziegler. Some would argue a teenager can't or shouldn't be charged with making sound choices for themselves and so I do try to choose the best for her always.

"Up on the stage in Sydney on Saturday, with Furler concealed and Maddie in the spotlight, it seemed that the superstar was deploying a child in a way that she herself refuses to be", Malkin wrote.

The singer said this is "an important conversation" to be had, regarding young stars in the spotlight.

The singer says she does feel "responsible for that" however she has learned that fame affects Maddie differently to her.

Posing on a beach in front of Rangitoto before the concert on Tuesday, Ziegler told her followers she was "a little bit obsessed" with New Zealand. "If that changes, we stop", she added. Not to a "perfect blank slate" but to a minor who is yet to learn about, or tame, the monster'.

Sia and Maddie Ziegler perform on stage together.

Furler began working with Ziegler after spotting her on the USA show Dance Moms and the teenager has now appeared in six music videos, live TV performances and a global tour as what Malkin called the "the fury and the face" of Furler's music.

Cool with it: 'I thought I would do this one video and never see her again.
