Simmonds and Giroux have two points each to lift Flyers over Oilers”

The Philadelphia Flyers hope it's the start of an impressive turnaround.

They now have a two-game winning streak for the second time this season.

Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist and Claude Giroux added a pair of helpers as the Flyers won their second game in a row, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Wednesday.

With 5:15 left in the second, Weise, sent in on a crafty pass by Claude Giroux (two assists), scored off the rush as he fired a shot from the high slot past Laurent Brossoit, who had allowed five goals in each of his previous two games. Then with the Flyers hanging onto a 3-2 lead with two minutes to go, McDavid sped in on the right side and got off his only shot of the game, but Elliott made the pad save to preserve the lead. Michael Raffl gave the Flyers an insurance goal 4:06 into the third, which was needed when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored with 6:40 to play.

The Flyers held the Oilers to just 25 shots in what was a grinding sort of game.

"Yeah, we talked about that".

"We're pretty resilient", Weise said. "We just have to come away with the two points". "I've really liked the way we've played the last two games".

After a scoreless first period, Leon Draisaitl tallied the shortie 3:41 into the second. With Edmonton short-handed, Connor McDavid and Draisaitl stormed up the ice on a two-on-one break. In that game, Coburn, Carter and Scottie Upshall (7 shots) accounted for 23 of the Flyers' 34 shots.

Playing with three rookies on defense because of an injury to Brandon Manning caused Mark Alt to enter the lineup.

"You throw on top of that I didn't think we had any type of passing execution, a lot of pucks bouncing in our feet, so we weren't clean at all".

Weal had a different perspective on the goal.

"Our forecheck was really good tonight in the neutral zone", Weal said. "It's not been for a lack of hard work and creating chances. I got out there and G made a pretty good play on the wall to me and their defense kind of sat back and I tried to use them as a screen". "There were a lot of improvements, a couple of things that I wanted to make sure I did tonight, and did. Maybe that second one is eliminated", Brossoit said.

"This is a real solid road win", head coach Dave Hakstol said. "Getting contributions from everyone, it's going to be huge if we want to keep stringing some wins together".

Darnell Nurse hit the cross bar 11 seconds into the third. His goal four minutes into the third period gave the Flyers breathing room with a two-goal lead.

Wayne Simmonds iced it with an empty-net goal in the last minute.

The Flyers tied it at 8:53, on their fourth power play of the first 30 minutes, and scored again at 14:45 on a long one through the five hole that Brossoit should have had.

The Flyers second straight win was also their second of the season against the Oilers, sweeping the season series. The first was a 2-1 comeback win for the Flyers in Philadelphia in October.

Elliott stopped 24 shots and he's expected to play on back-to-back nights after Michal Neuvirth was placed on injured reserve Wednesday morning (see story). Brennan was a healthy scratch along with C Jori Lehtera, while Lyon backed up starter Brian Elliott. Neither of Edmonton's waiver claims from last week, Brandon Davidson (Montreal) and Nathan Walker (Washington), has yet to play for the team this season... Also scratched was LW Anton Slepyshev.
