Ski racer dead after crash”

A 17-year-old German skier has died after a crash at Lake Louise Tuesday.

According to the International Ski Federation, Burkhart began his international skiing career in November 2016, competing in over 60 downhill, slalom and super G races across Europe, North and South America.

Emergency crews from Banff tried to treat the boy on the hill before the air ambulance arrived.

Burkhart is a member of Ski Club Garmisch in Germany and attends Sugar Bowl Academy in California.

17-year-old Max Burkhart passed away on Wednesday in hospital as a result of his injuries.

A spokesperson for Alpine Canada said they are devastated about this tragic loss of life.

"Our role in situations like this is to assist the Medical Examiner in determining the cause or manner of death, we conduct an investigation at the scene, taking photographs and witness statements, that sort of thing", said Corporal Curtis Peters.

It is the second alpine racing death this season for ski resorts in the Canadian Rockies.

Burkhart's death comes just weeks after French downhill skier David Poisson was killed during a training run in nearby Nakiska, dying November 13 after colliding with a tree.

"Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine encourage the ski family around the world to support the athletes' family and teammate through this hard time", said Alpine Canada.
