Steelers safety Mike Mitchell: 'This is a man's game'

Steelers safety Mike Mitchell: 'This is a man's game'”

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell is not happy about how football is being officiated in the NFL these days.

Monday night's ugly clash between the Steelers and Bengals, which featured multiple-head on collisions that sent players to the hospital and prompted suspensions, has drawn strong reactions throughout the league. Specifically, Mitchell took specific issue with Cincinnati's George Iloka and Pittsburgh's JuJu Smith-Schuster receiving the same on-game suspension that New England's Rob Gronkowski did, given that Iloka and Smith-Schuster's hits came during a play while Gronkowski's was made in frustration after a play was already completed.

But Mitchell believes that is just football.

While some find Mitchell's point of view and brand of football draconian and risky, he gives voice to others who feel the game is under attack and that the violence on the field is a necessary part of the sport that participants have signed up for. "I feel like I've got to ask a guy, "Hey are you ready for me to hit you right" now before I hit you?"

Although former NFL player Jon Runyan handed out the one-game suspension to Smith-Schuster, Foster said Goodell remains the league's enforcer.

Like Iloka, Mitchell plays free safety.

"If you don't want to get into it don't come out here". I don't know, sounds awfully unsafe and barbaric to me. "I donate more money to Cincinnati underprivileged kids than probably people on the Bengals, so don't give me that name".

"We gotta do better as players when we sign the next CBA". There's no way - I see two people get post-play penalties, post-play infractions that don't have to do with football and you get the same suspension as a guy who is making a football play in a football game.

"You don't think Goodell doesn't know about what is going on?" Let's not try to turn football into a risky, barbaric game. There needs to be a set guideline on how you do what you do. You never see us get to line somebody up in a hole like a linebacker. If you don't want to be a little kid and get your ass hit, don't come out here. At the end of the day this is Foot-Ball. If you wanna see flag football, then let's take our pads off, that would make it easier for me. Before I got drafted, I had $368 to my bank account. Except the Hasselbeck thing anyway - he was mad that Hasselbeck said his hit on Alex Smith was dirty, but the league did fine Mitchell nearly $50,000 for the hit and Smith was pretty mad about it.
