Trump should skip Civil Rights Museum opening, NAACP says”

The NAACP said Tuesday that President Donald Trump should cancel his plans to attend the opening of a MS civil rights museum, saying his appearance would be divisive.

He's calling Trump's planned attendance "an affront to the veterans of the civil rights movement".

"As a freedom fighter and contemporary of Emmett Till, Trump's visit is an insult".

Governor Phil Bryant told WLBT-TV an invitation was extended to the president several months ago but no official confirmation of his visit has come from the White House.

Some civil rights leaders and black ministers have said they will protest the president's visit to the museum.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump will help open the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Saturday. Sanders says that would be "very sad". The president said that both white supremacist groups and counter-protestors were at fault for the violence that ensued in Virginia in August.

Trump paid a visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. earlier this year.
