Will this former Mississippi State standout return to the Major League Baseball?

Will this former Mississippi State standout return to the Major League Baseball?”

Rafael Palmeiro, who's 53 and last played in 2005, says he is thinking about trying to make a comeback.

At the age of 53, the former Baltimore Orioles first baseman and designated hitter told Ken Rosenthal that he is certain that he can still make it in the Major League Baseball. The 22-year-old plays for the Class-A affiliate, but dad doesn't plan on spending any time in the minors.

Sure, Palmeiro had some great statistics and great accomplishments. In 2008, he was inducted into the Mississippi State University Hall of Fame and in 2009, he was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. He was selected to four All-Star games, earned three gold gloves and was awarded two silver sluggers. He batted.288 with 569 homers, 1,835 RBIs in his career. Palmeiro's career ended in 2005, after he was suspended in August for testing positive for steroids.

Speaking with The Athletic, Palmeiro says he's out to prove that he can still compete, even at the age of 53, without the use of steroids. "Never. Ever. Period", Palmeiro said in a released statement.

That is entirely because Palmeiro has been labeled a steroid user, something he has strongly denied.

Palmeiro had two stints with the Texas Rangers.

It seems Palmeiro, who played for the Cubs, Rangers and Orioles, is motivated by the steroids scandal. The answer: yes. Baseball doesn't need Palmeiro.

There are many reasons why Palmeiro may want to return. But, if he played again - his name could return to the ballot.

Julio Franco became the oldest regular player in the league when he played 55 games for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets in 2007 at the age of 49, hitting.222/.321/.289 with a home run and 16 RBI.

None of that matters, though. In fact, in 2005, when he was with the Orioles, he was suspended for PED use. Following a third offense, a player will be banned from Major League Baseball. But regardless of how good a hitter he was, that was 13 years ago.
