YouTube cutting access to Amazon Fire TV on New Year's Day

YouTube cutting access to Amazon Fire TV on New Year's Day”

"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services", reads Google's statement.

You will still be able to access YouTube on the Amazon Fire TV until January 1, however, so if you're a user, I'd start making the most of it because I don't see either company backing down on this one.

Google on Tuesday said it would pull its YouTube apps from Amazon's Echo Show, which is an Alexa-powered device with a screen, and Fire TV starting next month. Why?

Amazon said in a statement, "Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website".

It's the latest twist in a to-ing and fro-ing between the tech giants which has seen Amazon pulling the Chromecast and Nexus Player from its online store in 2015, Google dropping - and then partially restoring - functionality for Amazon Prime on their Chromecast device earlier this year, and a lack of support for Amazon Prime on Chromecast and most Android TV devices.

"We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon", says Google.

While the above paragraph might convey the facts from Google, we are guessing that YouTube ad revenue had something to do with it too. This isn't the first time the two companies have sparred over services. Google has already made its intentions clear by blocking YouTube access from the Amazon Echo Show which is now being sold in the U.S. and can be described as an Alexa equipped Echo speaker with a 7inch display. Amazon later reintroduced YouTube to the device, but the voice commands it added violated the use terms and on Tuesday Google again removed the service.

Meanwhile, another long-standing streaming media tiff is getting (somewhat) resolved. But it's certainly not helping Amazon or its consumers for the company to limit its selection - particularly cutting out such popular competing products as Apple TV - without real justification. Amazon's decision of not selling the Google Chromecast and Apple TV (both of which have dedicated YouTube apps) has further strained the relation between Google and Amazon.
