Zidane confirms Varane injury

Varane pulled up with a reported muscle strain during Madrid's 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, ruling him out of their match against Sevilla on Saturday, and Zidane admitted a second time that Los Blancos were weighing up potential arrivals.

Zinedine Zidane has reiterated that Real Madrid could make signings in January after confirming Raphael Varane will miss their next game.

The Frenchman also gave an update on the injury to defender Varane. The manager will be without Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Casemiro, who are suspended, while Jesus Vallejo is injured.

"Rafa has been hurt, we will have tests tomorrow", Zidane said. "The player is optimistic but he will not be available on Saturday, that's for sure", said Zidane, before admitting midfielder Marcos Llorente may have to slot into the back four. "We have to look for solutions".

Real have precious little room for error as they already trail La Liga leaders Barca by eight points.

And further forward, Madrid could again be without Gareth Bale due to a calf problem.

"It could happen", Zidane added. The French global came off the pitch instantly after feeling the injury on Wednesday.

Injuries aside, it was another enjoyable Champions League night for Real as Cristiano Ronaldo set yet another record in the competition.

Ronaldo's European form - he has nine in the Champions League in total - is in stark contrast to his struggles in La Liga, where he has scored just twice in 10 appearances this season. "In the end we played a serious game, and ended the group in a good way".

"If you ask me about these two players, I will be very happy when they can have this deal but this is the responsibility of the club to try to do this".

Madrid's possible opponents in Monday's UCL round-of-16 draw are Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma, or Besiktas. The important thing was to get through to the knockout stage, we've done that.

"Hopefully Real Madrid can win it for a third straight year".
