Nadal and Muguruza win ITF player of the year awards

Spaniards Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza were named as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) world champions on Friday - the first time in 19 years the awards have gone to players from the same country.

31-year-old Nadal, who picked the gong for the third time, has also become the oldest ITF men's world champion after a season which saw him lift his 10th French Open and third US Open title.

The ITF World Champions will receive their awards at the 2018 ITF World Champions Dinner on Tuesday 5 June, in Paris, during Roland Garros.

It should be noted that it is for the first time since 1998 that the ITF world champions in both men's and women's category hail from the same country.

"It's a great honor to be recognized again as ITF World Doubles Champion and to have the news top off what's been an incredible final season for me", the recently-retired Hingis said. "He is a great role model for all of us, so it is a great moment for tennis in Spain".

Muguruza won 47 matches and lost just 21 on the WTA tour in 2017.

I knew that putting in the hard work would pay off eventually and it made winning Wimbledon and achieving the No 1 ranking so special.

Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil won the men's doubles award while Chan Yun-Jan of Chinese Taipei and the recently-retired Martina Hingis of Switzerland took the women's prize.
