Jerusalem: UN move to annul US decision By

The Muslim nation summit was a response to U.S. President Donald Trump's December 6 decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Mr Trump abruptly reversed decades of US policy this month when he recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage from Palestinians.

In a press statement, Malki said the leadership will ask all the member states of the UN General Assembly to vote on the same draft resolution that is to be submitted to the Security Council, as the U.S. will not be able to use the veto at the General Assembly.

The council could vote early next week, diplomats said.

The U.S. vice president is due in the region later this week but the Palestinians have said he is not welcome and President Mahmoud Abbas will not meet him during his visit, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki said last week, a move the White House described as "unfortunate".

The draft United Nations resolution "affirms that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, status or demographic composition of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant Security Council resolutions". The draft United Nations text expresses "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem".

This states that if there no unanimity among the five permanent members of the Security Council, the General Assembly may act itself to maintain global peace and security, and may convene an emergency session.

However, diplomats expect the United States to use its power of Veto to block the resolution after the US Ambassador to the UN, Niki Haley, called Trump's decision as "the just and right thing to do".

The Palestinians are more likely to take the issue to the U.N. General Assembly under Resolution 377A, known as the "Uniting for Peace" resolution.

Backed by Muslim countries, the Palestinians are expected to turn to the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution rejecting the U.S. decision, if, as expected, the measure is vetoed by the United States at the council.

Even though the protest was peaceful, rows of police behind coils of barbed wire held back the crowd outside the U.S. embassy.

Since the decision, nine Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,900 people have been injured in protests in the occupied territories. It says that all of Jerusalem - a city holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians - is its capital, while Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent state.

Israel sees the entire city as its undivided capital.

Israel's control and sovereignty over the city is not recognised by any country in the world and, as of now, all embassies in Israel are based in Tel Aviv, although some countries have based their consulate offices in Jerusalem.
