India comes out on top in improving broadband speeds in 2017: Ookla”

Ookla, the company behind the popular speed-testing platform - Speedtest.net - couldn't agree more as it publishes its yearly report on mobile data and fixed broadband speeds.

At the beginning of 2017 India recorded average mobile download speed of 7.65 Mbps, which grew to 8.80 Mbps as of November, a 15 percent increase. Mobile data download speeds in Pakistan improved the most among populous countries by over 56%. On the "World's Most Populous Countries, Improvement in Mobile Download" chart, India has reserved the second position with a year-on-year improvement of 42.4% and a mean speed of 8.8Mbps. Since then competition has increased in both mobile and broadband sector, bringing down the data rates while increasing internet speeds. "India still has a long way to go to catch up with countries that have top speeds around the world, however, we at Ookla are highly optimistic about the capacity for growth that is available in the Indian market", said Doug Suttles, Co-Founder and General Manager at Ookla. During November 2017, India recorded average download speed of 18.82Mbps, whereas the United States had average download speeds of 75.94Mbps, followed by Japan with 73.51Mbps.

India has been ranked among the top in terms of improving broadband download speed this year, as per Ookla's Speedtest Global Index 2017. Pakistan is followed by India and Brazil whose internet speed in 2017 increased by 42.4% and 27.6% respectively. As for the fixed broadband speed, the country ranked 76th.

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index compares internet speed data from around the world monthly.

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index uses data from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using their SpeedTest service every month.

Internet speed has improved in India and consumers take advantage of the opportunities these speeds present, it only stands to reason that increased demand will lead to innovation across mediums that also open up new ways to create and connect with each other.
