3GPP declares first 5G NR spec complete

3GPP declares first 5G NR spec complete”

The members of the 3GPP now have to approve the specs for Standalone 5G, which will replace the current 4G LTE networks. Coming from the sheets to reality, the approval is a giant leap towards the improvement in hardware specifications.

Initially, there was an air of scepticism about the acceleration, however most of the logistics were laid out before the RAN plenary meeting in Lisbon, Portugal by numerous tech firms including Qualcomm.

While the specs themselves won't be announced until next week, they're said to offer support for the full range of low (600MHz, 700MHz), mid-range (3.5GHz) and high-frequency, millimeter wave (50GHz) spectrum. However, it might still take a little longer for 5G networks to finally arrive in your country. Earlier, the International Telecommunication Union (the ITU) and the 3GPP officially defined a "4G" network as providing a 100 Mbps data rate when moving and a 1 Gpbs (or one gigabit) while stationary.

Following this development, the mobile industry can start large-scale trials and commercial deployments of 5G NR as early as 2019.

Some parts of the standard have been put on hold, and will be worked on after the Christmas period; and there is also the Standalone version of 5G NR, which is still scheduled for completion in June 2018. Balazs Bertenyi, RAN Chair called it "an Impressive achievement in a remarkably short time, with credit due particularly to the Working Groups". What a shame they couldn't wait a day until the 3GPP released its own account of the success... such are the demands of the daily news cycle and the risk of getting the news lost in the Christmas and holiday season.
