Man threatened San Francisco tourist area on Christmas”

A former US Marine and expert marksman was charged Friday in a foiled ISIS-inspired attack planned for Christmas on San Francisco's Pier 39, according to federal court documents.

The agent told him "to go home and think about what he was saying", the documents say, but Jameson instead said he was ready and wanted to do something similar to recent attacks in NY and San Bernardino, California.

Jameson also said he would like to use explosives to "funnel" people on the crowded pier into a smaller area, according to the agent. Pier 39, packed with restaurants, bars and souvenir shops, is one of San Francisco's most popular tourist spots.

The Muslim convert planned to use a combination of explosives, firearms and a vehicle to carry out his attack on the pier on Christmas Day, which he claimed was "the ideal day to commit the attack", according to the agent's affidavit. The suspect reportedly requested ammunition, powder, tubing and nails from the undercover agent-materials that could be used to make a pipe bomb-and also offered to provide ISIS with financial support. "We will not allow the thwarted attempts of one unsafe individual to disrupt our way of life".

The FBI began investigating in mid-September when it learned that Jameson was expressing support for posts that favored terrorism or the Islamic State group. They also found fireworks, two rifles and a 9mm handgun.

Jameson "espoused radical jihadi beliefs" and meant to carry out the attack in support of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), authorities allege. He was arrested Friday and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Jameson attended basic training and received a sharpshooter certification from the U.S. Marine Corps, but he was discharged in 2009 for "fraudulent enlistment" after reportedly failing to disclose a latent asthma history, according to the court document.

Court documents show Jameson told the undercover agent he was "well versed" in the Anarchist Cookbook, a book detailing the construction of explosives. "I have been trained in combat and things of war", Jameson told one agent.

Two days after their meeting, an Federal Bureau of Investigation employee "mistakenly" called Jameson using a Washington, D.C., phone number but hung up when Jameson answered the phone in Arabic.

"The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is real _ and it is serious", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement, but federal agents are protecting the nation from what he called "an alleged plot to kill Americans".
