Black teen brutally beaten by police while handcuffed, police remain silent”

Police say multiple officers tried to question Wilkerson around 11:52 p.m. Saturday after seeing him emerge from behind a closed downtown business, WSFA-NBC reported. Once apprehended, officers say Wilkerson resisted arrest and appeared to "reach for a weapon", leading them to use force to restrain him. When police finally caught the 17-year-old, they punched, kicked and brutally beat him until he was almost unconscious.

Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton shared images of the boy's bruised and bloodied face on Facebook.

The Wilkerson family is asking for body and dash camera footage to be released.

"The force was reasonable and necessary", he said.

Jackson's long post read: "Wilkerson was resisting an illegal arrest which is upheld under Alabama law".

Wilkerson's father also said that while police had handcuffed his son, the charges against him were dropped.

The 17-year-old needed hospital treatment after suffering trauma to the brain, swelling on the brain and a cracked eye socket, his father Ulysses Wilkerson Jr told WKRG.

She added that the first thought in her mind was, "I hope they are not beating him".

The organisation's Gerald Jackson said Wilkerson was walking with a friend and "feared for his life, safety, and ran from the police".

The Troy Police Department has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to investigate after officers arrested a 17-year-old using physical force.

The investigation was still "open and active". He was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center and from there he was transported to University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

"Troy police officers did this to my son while he was in handcuffs", Angela Williams, Wilkerson's mother, wrote in a now-viral Facebook post, alongside a photo of her beaten son. He also said the "State Board of Investigation (SBI) does not have the ability to place any member of another department on leave". "The family is very, very upset with the City of Troy and especially the police department".

"They had him handcuffed when we got in there they said he was charged with obstruction of justice the ambulance came to take him to UAB the took the handcuffs off and dropped the charges on him", added Wilkerson Jr. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into the December 23 incident.
