Census Bureau shows Idaho is nation's fastest growing state

Census Bureau shows Idaho is nation's fastest growing state”

Idaho's population increased 2.2 percent to 1.7 million from July 2016 and July 2017, followed by Nevada's increase of 2 percent to just shy of 3 million.

This is the fourth year in a row that Illinois' population decreased, a troubling trend, according to William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution.

Other neighboring Midwest states saw population increases during the same period, with Missouri gaining 22,356 residents, in gaining 32,811 residents, MI gaining 28,866 residents and Wisconsin gaining 22,566 residents.

The chart below shows that NY has been losing residents to other states since at least 1961, the earliest year for which data are available.

"We don't see it in MI, we don't see it in Ohio".

Idaho was the nation's fastest-growing state over the a year ago. Only California and Florida attracted more foreign immigrants than NY, and only California and Texas had higher natural gains.

The dropoff in Wyoming's mineral extraction economy was a major reason why people left the state.

States in the South and West continued to lead in population growth.

Orphe Divounguy, a chief economist with the Illinois Policy Institute, stated that as residents continue to leave their state with their money, it leaves the state with fewer tax dollars to pay its bills.

"Illinois is no longer a place where people want to put down roots", he said.

Following Idaho and Nevada are Utah (1.9 percent), Washington (1.7 percent) and Florida along with Arizona (1.6 percent).

NY lost another 190,508 residents to other states during the year ending last July 1, bringing the state's total domestic migration change since 2010 to a net loss of more than 1 million people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's annual population estimates. The state saw a decline of 190,000, who relocated out of state between July 2016, and July 2017, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau last week.
