U.S. to Resume Full Visa Services in Turkey

U.S. to Resume Full Visa Services in Turkey”

Services were halted following the arrest of a local consulate employee in Istanbul, who remains incarcerated on terrorism-related charges.

Earlier on Thursday, the U.S. Embassy had said it would resume all visa services after Turkey had fulfilled high-level assurances on detained local U.S. Embassy personnel.

But the statement added: "We continue to have serious concerns about the existing allegations against arrested local employees of our mission in Turkey".

The state department said it was "confident that the security posture has improved sufficiently".

In a statement released Thursday, the State Department said that since October, Turkey had adhered to promises that no local employees of the embassy were being investigated, that no employees would be detained for "performing their official duties", and that the government of Turkey would consult with the USA before detaining or arresting local staff in the future.

Turkey had "adhered to high level assurances" made to the USA, it said.

There are at least 11 U.S. citizens now under arrest in Turkey.

Although the embassy said it still remains concerned for its arrested staff in Turkey, the progress in ironing out differences may ease the perception of political risk, a key reason for the lira's weakness against the dollar in the fourth quarter.

On Nov. 4, the U.S. Embassy announced it would process limited visa applications in Turkey, leading to the resumption of some visa services at Turkish missions in the U.S.

In the aftermath of the coup attempt, which was led by military officers, 40,000 people were arrested and 120,000 sacked or suspended.
