Accumulating snow arrives Friday night, followed by more frigid temperatures

Accumulating snow arrives Friday night, followed by more frigid temperatures”

For those of you heading out on New Year's Eve, you can expect temperatures to continue to fall from about 3 p.m. well past midnight. We did see the sunshine return late Friday morning though, so it was nice to have sunnier skies for the afternoon.

High pressure over the area brought sunny skies and light southeasterly winds.

Sunday: Arctic cold front on the way.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy but very light winds and milder with a high of 67.

It's looking like New Years Eve will be the nicest day of the weekend as lake-effect snow winds down on Saturday. Highs will be between 0-14° in the afternoon (with wind chills below zero.) It will be extremely cold as we ring in the New Year Sunday night. "Then another shot of cold air comes in for Sunday". It's slightly less cold than Thursday, but, without any sunshine, it basically feels the same.

Cold temperatures will continue through Friday, with a chance of snow flurries in the afternoon and bitterly cold temperatures continuing through the weekend. Wind: NE 10-15. Low: 5. Most locations are presently experiencing weather that is considerably warmer than normal. Areas of freezing drizzle will also be possible through mid to late morning.

2017 is expected to rank among the top five warmest years on record.

The cold won't be leaving us anytime soon. Relatively "mild" highs should top out in the mid to upper 40s.

Prepare for damaging cold to arrive Sunday and linger through Tuesday.

- International Falls, Minnesota, the so-called icebox of the nation, plummeted to minus-36 on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of minus-32 for the date. Temperatures will struggle to around 33° during the day.

Thu: High: 23 Low: 8 Partly cloudy. Today temperatures will be steady to slowly falling to around 10 degrees by this afternoon. Morning lows will be in the teens.
