'Bom' call lands Indian-origin CEO of US firm in trouble”

He had called a helpline number and had apparently, asked for the "BOM-DEL" flight status. Moorjani's lawyer argued that his client's intention was not to make a threat call and that the woman in the control room had misunderstood him. The telephone operator allegedly heard the person saying "bomb hai" meaning (there is a bomb in Hindi). Amidst cascading flight delays on Sunday due to weather issues, an annoyed Moorjani made a call to a toll-free number linked to Mumbai International Airport Ltd's control room at 2.30pm.

According to version two, which is the operator's version, Vinod was asked to clarify his question, when he hung up.

An official told the news agency that he was travelling from Mumbai to Virginia with his wife and children.

The passenger, 45-year-old Vinod Moorjani, was take a flight from Mumbai to Delhi, then take a connecting flight to Rome.

According to India Today, Vinod Moorjani, who is the CEO of a USA -based IT company, was arrested on December 31 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport while waiting to board a flight to Delhi, then Rome.

Officials say Mr Moorjani made the call after becoming frustrated with delays.

A U.S. national was recently arrested in India for inquiring about "BOM-DEL" - the abbreviation used by airlines to describe the flight route between Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay) to Delhi. The operator claims she then asked the caller to confirm what he had just said but the passenger hung up, following which authorities were informed about the call.

The Sahar police arrested Moorjani, who was spotted at a telephone booth in the CCTV footage of the airport, the official said.

Moorjani was produced in the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate Court yesterday, which granted him bail on a sum of Rs 15,000 and a surety of the same amount. He has been booked under IPC sections 506 (II) (criminal intimidation), 505 (I)(b) (intent to cause fear or alarm to public).

This isn't the first time that using an abbreviation for Mumbai (BOM) has caused a bomb scare.
