Ex-hostage Joshua Boyle charged with sex assault, assault, forcible confinement: lawyer

Ex-hostage Joshua Boyle charged with sex assault, assault, forcible confinement: lawyer”

The couple were kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2012 and had three children while in captivity.

Boyle, 34, appeared in court Monday on a variety of charges, ranging from two counts of sexual assault to two counts of unlawful confinement, The Toronto Star reported.

Granger says Boyle is presumed innocent.

"He's never been in trouble before".

The Toronto Star, citing court documents, reported on Tuesday that Mr Boyle faced eight assault charges, two sexual assault charges, two unlawful confinement charges, one count of misleading police, uttering death threats and causing someone to take a noxious substance.

A publication ban bars any information that could identify the alleged victims or witnesses in the case.

"The stupidity and the evil of the Haqqani Network's kidnapping of a pilgrim, and his heavily pregnant wife, engaged in helping ordinary villagers in Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan, was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorizing the murder of my infant daughter", Boyle said at the time.

"We look forward to receiving the evidence and defending him against these charges" he added. He is due to make a brief court appearance on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Boyles in his Parliament Hill office on December 18, a meeting that came to light after a Twitter account named "The Boyle Family" posted photos of the meeting. Photos that Boyle released at the time on Twitter showed Trudeau holding the youngest child in his lap.

Boyle, a Canadian, and his American wife, 31-year-old Caitlan Coleman, along with their three young children, were rescued on October 11 by Pakistani troops from captivity in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where they were held by Taliban-linked extremists.

"Obviously, this is now another ordeal that he is going to have to deal with, and is starting to deal with", Boyle's defence lawyer said. USA officials say the family spent nearly all their confinement in neighboring Pakistan, which is where they were freed by Pakistani troops.
