Iceland Makes It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men

Iceland Makes It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men”

Women in Iceland woke up to a courageous new world Monday as the country became the first nation on the planet to make equal pay between the sexes a legal requirement.

As the law is being enforced, both government offices and private business - which employ more than 25 staff - will have to obtain a special government certification on the equal pay policies, failing which, they could be fined. Sanders's presidential campaign website, which is still up and running, calls the wage gap a "national disgrace", saying, "It is wrong that women working full-time only earn 79 cents for every dollar a man earns".

Officials hope the move will help Iceland to completely close its gender wage gap by 2020.

'It's a mechanism to ensure women and men are being paid equally, ' she told Al Jazeera.

Iceland is an island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and houses approximately 323,000 people.

Iceland is ringing in the new year with mandatory equal pay for men and women who do the same job at companies larger than 25 persons.

The new legislation was supported by Iceland's centre-right government, as well as the opposition, in a parliament where almost 50% of all members are women.

It seems to be a Nordic trend: Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden are all in the top five of the gender parity index.

Iceland has become the first country in the world to mandate that women receive the same pay as their male colleagues for doing the same work. The association works to increase women's representation in parliament, eradicate gender income inequality, make gender studies a mandatory subject in secondary schools, and raise awareness of violence against women, according to its website.

The WEF noted in its report that despite Iceland's achievements toward equal pay, "its gender gap in the areas of economic participation and opportunity and educational attainment" have still widened over the years, following a global trend. It ranks 49th on the WEF index, with low scores in women's political empowerment and their health and life expectancy.
