Local app company bought by Apple, plans to stay put

Local app company bought by Apple, plans to stay put”

The acquisition was first revealed in a BuddyBuild blog post.

Vancouver-based Buddybuild could help Apple shake that image by giving developers another tool to deal with bugs.

Buddybuild's team will be folded into the Xcode engineering group.

"We've always been proud to be a Canadian company, so we're also pleased that we will be staying right here in Vancouver - a hotbed of developer and engineering talent", Buddybuild said in a statement. That aspect of the service will be sunset in March.

The system should fit nicely into Apple's existing set of tools, bringing additional methods for testing, debugging and deploying mobile apps through a proprietary channel. Buddybuild also said it was no longer taking new customers, which means existing support is likely to end once those paid memberships run their course and Apple rolls out tools in Xcode. Apple has released a new, easier-to-learn language, Swift, a revenue-sharing model for subscription apps and has moved more of its software research out into the open.

Buddybuild was founded in 2015 by former Amazon employees, Dennis Pilarinos and Christopher Stott. The Vancouver-based startup raised almost $7.6 million, and its advisors include fellow Canadian Stewart Butterfield, the founder and CEO of the popular workplace chat service Slack, according to financial tracking service PitchBook.

Buddybuild announced Tuesday (via iMore) that the company was purchased by Apple. The remaining roster of existing customers is an impressive one, including Mozilla, Hootsuite, Reddit, SoundCloud, FourSquare and The New York Times.
