Quadrantids meteor showers to light up Qatar Sky tomorrow night

Quadrantids meteor showers to light up Qatar Sky tomorrow night”

If you missed Monday's supermoon or didn't get a good look because of clouds over Southern California, you'll have another opportunity to see a supermoon january 31 when we welcome the first of two blue moons expected in 2018 - the second will arrive on March 31. But make no mistake, the Quadrantids are coming. "You may see 50 to 100 meteors in an hour, which is pretty good".

This meteor shower is known for bright fireball meteors with long, glowing tails.

The usually strong Quadrantid meteor shower may be a washout for 2018.

But catching a glimpse can be worth it because this display is different.

Because of where the meteors are coming from, people at mid or high latitudes in the northern hemisphere will have a better shot of seeing meteors, according to EarthSky. Full moons offer a lot more brightness to the sky due to more sunlight being reflected off the lunar surface back towards Earth.

What is the Quadrantid meteor shower?

Most meteor showers consist of debris from comets - objects made from ice and dust - but the Quadrantids come from a metallic asteroid called 2003 EH1. With each pass, more water was boiled off, leaving just the rocky core now.

In fact, nearly everything about this meteor shower may be testimony to the concept of entropy, the phenomenon of order falling into a disordered equilibrium. Quadrans is now considered part of the constellation Bootes, near the Big Dipper. Like these other annual favorites, the shower gets its name from the constellation the streaks appear to radiate from, but the Quadrantids namesake no longer exists.

So if you get out somewhere between dusk and dawn Wednesday night and look north, you may have the chance to see the destruction of debris from a former comet in a shower named after a former constellation.

As Josh Gabbatiss at The Independent reports, the meteor shower itself was first described by Italian astronomer Antonio Brucalassi who in 1825 reported that he saw the night sky "traversed by a multitude of the luminous bodies known by the name of falling stars".

This shower technically may peak around 4 p.m. Wednesday, but meteor showers tend to be most spectacular at early dawn, around 3 or 4 a.m., Manning said.

AccuWeather predicts a temperature in the teens or lower, so dress warmly.

Unfortunately, not only is the moon nearly full at this point, but it's also a supermoon.

Unlike other meteor showers that tend to stay at their peak for a couple days, the Quadrantids are fleeting: They peak for only a few hours on the night of January 3 and morning of January 4.

On a typical night, you might expect to see a handful of meteors per hour-anywhere from two to 16, according to the American Meteor Society, depending on the time of day and year.
