White House Threatens New Sanctions If Iran Doesn't Allow Civilian Protests

White House Threatens New Sanctions If Iran Doesn't Allow Civilian Protests”

Asked if the president has a bit of a transparency issue when it comes to his golf course visits and whether the White House has "some kind of issue about his" golfing, Sanders turned the question back around on the media.

She said the global community "cannot sit silent" as those demonstrating are met with violence.

Mr Trump "stands with the Iranian people", Ms Conway said. "Can you tell me the biggest single thing the president has accomplished for the American people during his time on the golf course?" She said it was possible the current regime could reform and meet those demands.

The Trump administration also raised the possibility it could impose more sanctions on Iran to punish it for cracking down on protesters. And we support them stopping being a state sponsor of terror.

The US is "watching reports very closely of any potential human rights abuses", she said, alluding to existing sanctions authorities that allow the US to target Iran for human rights violations.

The US is preparing to impose sanctions on Iran's Revolutionary Guards in the wake of the largest political protests to grip the country in almost a decade.

Trump has posted several tweets in recent days about the Iranian protests that have resulted in at least 21 deaths. Though Trump repeatedly criticized President Obama for golfing while he was in office and vowed that he was "not going to have time to go play golf" on the campaign trail, he's golfed more than three times as much as Obama did to this point in his term.

Iran's foreign ministry fired back that the USA leader was "wasting his time sending useless and insulting tweets" and would be better off focusing on "homeless and hungry people" in his own country.

University students attend an anti-government protest at Tehran University on December 30, 2017.

Sanders, the daughter of the former Arkansas governor and an SEC fan, said she was simply trying to congratulate "two great football teams in the greatest conference in the country".
