Jimmy Iovine to Leave Apple in August?

Jimmy Iovine to Leave Apple in August?”

Music legend Jimmy Iovine, who heads Apple Music, will leave the iPhone maker in August, according to Billboard.

Iovine joined Apple Music in 2014, when Apple paid $3 billion for Beats Electronics and the Beats Music streaming service, both of which were co-founded by Iovine and Dr. Dre.

"A music service needs to be more than a bunch of songs and a few playlists", Iovine said in an interview early past year. Iovine always seemed out of place at Apple and so it's no surprise the timing of departure is linked to his Apple shares fully vesting.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Hits Daily Double first reported the news.

Iovine, a music industry stalwart, and former CEO of Interscope, was an early proponent of Apple's iTunes and iPod music products. It's also unclear if Apple plans to replace Iovine, who technically has never even had an official title at Apple Music - he just runs the show as "Jimmy". His stock answer, when asked what will happen when that contract is up in August, has been a version of "I have no idea what I'll be doing then".

Though to be fair, Apple Music, Apple's subscription streaming service, has expanded to more than 30 million paying subscribers since its June 2015 launch.
